Nachgefragt: Waldorfschulen – Ministerium nimmt Geschichtsbuch ins Visier |
Waldorf schools – department takes a look at history book
Sometimes we are really surprised by what our reporting can set in motion. At the beginning of this year, we reported about bad experiences of individual parents of Waldorf students and stirred up a hornets’ nest. Eric Friedler and Barbara Siebert report. |

| Recap: In February, REPORT Mainz presented single cases of racist and anti-semitic incidents at Waldorf schools. The reaction was immense. The Bund der freien Waldorfschulen (Association of Independent Waldorf Schools) hit us with a multitude of lawsuits. All requests for “Gegendarstellungen” [1] were rejected, as well as two requests for retractions, one lawsuit is still ongoing. On top of that, calls went out on the Internet to protest against the news coverage. Instead of dealing with the incidents, we saw ostensible displays of activism in front of the Gedächtniskirche in Berlin. We looked further into the matter.
| Rudolf Steiner: His pedagogical teachings form the basis of Waldorf schools. The school are mostly free in how they design their curricula. Over many years, they have created an image of learning without fear, without grade pressure, based on tolerance and freedom.
| Imagine our surprise when parents of former Waldorf students talked to us about experiences that did not seem to fit that picture. Moreover: those parents wanted to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.

| Steiner, a leadership figure? Our research also led us to Switzerland. There we met Samuel Althof, a spokesperson for the AKdH initiative. For the first time, we encountered suspicions of anti-semitism at single Waldorf schools.

| This is exactly what the followers of the Waldorf movement do not want to acknowledge. But Waldorf schools are not immune to anti-semitic tendencies. At least this is how we understand this former Waldorf student. She is Jewish. The REPORT broadcast brought back bitter memories. With us, she talks openly about prejudices against Jewish students:

| A tragic, but isolated case? We ask Joel Berger. He is the spokesperson of the “Rabbinerkonferenz Deutschland” [2]. He too wishes that Judaism is not presented as a backward culture at Waldorf schools. He too can name examples of Jewish students who have had bad experiences:

| Another development: The REPORT broadcast triggered a meeting of the parents of these former Waldorf students from all over Germany. All tell of negative experiences at Waldorf schools, tell of discrimination because of origin or belief. After the broadcast, they started browsing through their children’s lesson books together. Again and again they encounter peculiar passages, and again and again they encounter one word: Atlantis, Atlantis, Atlantis.
| According to Rudolf Steiner, the perished continent harbored the origin of the Aryan race. He describes Aryans as the most highly developed human race. The lesson books devote a lot of space to the passages about Aryans and Atlantis.

Was verbirgt sich dahinter? | In Karlsruhe, we meet the Waldorf expert of the Evangelische Kirche [one of the two predominant churches in Germany]. He has seen the link between Atlantis and Aryans to Waldorf schools before. [We ask] What is this about?

Wir haben nachgelesen, und fanden folgende Zitate: | Stuttgart: here are the headquarters of the Bund der freien Waldorfschulen. Waldorf teachers are trained here. One aspect of Waldorf instruction: During the first eight school years, the students do not use school books. There are only books for teachers – the students copy down what the teacher presents. This current reading list, compiled by the department for pedagogical research at the Bund der freien Waldorfschulen, is used by main lesson teachers to prepare their lessons. For history in fifth grade, it includes Ernst Uehli’s book “Atlantis and the miracles of ice age art”. We found the following quotes there:

| For over eighty years now, many children have been enjoying their school days at Waldorf schools. Anti-semitism and racial discrimination must not have a place there. And besides, we think it’s high time for Atlantis to also sink and perish in Waldorf schools.
Guten Abend! | Closing statement by Bernhard Nellessen:We are curious what reactions this report will draw. In any event, there’s one thing you can rely on: we will keep an eye on this topic. We will not let ourselves be intimidated. Have a good evening!

[1] Under German law, a person has the right to force a news publisher to publish his or her reply under certain conditions. This privilege is known as “right to reply”. I believe it is unknown in Anglo-Saxon law. See this URL for more information [in English]. |

[2] Jewish sources on the web describe Joel Berger as “national rabbi of Germany”, or “chief rabbi” – I don’t know what the proper English title should be, but he certainly seems to be a high-ranking representative. I note that Berger is also a member of the committee that endorses AKdH’s activities. The full list is here. After the first REPORT broadcast in February, representatives of the Anthroposophical movement directly targeted members of this committee in an attempt to discredit what AKdH is doing.
[3] I think that’s what the equivalent of “Staatssekretaer” is. Each department of the German government has a “Minister” = secretary, and usually two “Staatssekretaere”, which should roughly correspond to “under secretaries”, or maybe “deputy secretaries” in the US government’s departments. See also the department’s website.
[4] An institution of the German government that evaluates books and other media with regard to whether they are dangerous to children and juveniles. The Bundespruefstelle is supervised by the department of family affairs. My understanding is that “banning” the book would not mean an outright ban, but merely the equivalent of a government-enforced NC-17 rating. I may be wrong on that last point, though. |
